Kaymac Completes Major Dredging Programme at Burry Port Harbour

Kaymac Marine & Civil Engineering has successfully completed a major dredging programme at Burry Port Harbour in Carmarthenshire, removing more than 55,000 m³ of accumulated material from the harbour and navigation channel.

Appointed by Carmarthenshire County Council, Kaymac delivered the programme within a challenging live tidal environment, with the works designed to reduce harbour and channel bed levels, improve navigable water depths and provide safer vessel access across a wider tidal window.

Delivering in a challenging tidal environment

The dredging operation required careful coordination around rapidly changing tides, variable ground conditions, environmental restrictions and the continued use of the harbour by the public and RNLI.

Kaymac’s site team worked seven days a week during daylight hours, using carefully planned tidal working windows to maximise productivity while maintaining safe control of heavy plant and material movements.

The operation utilised specialist heavy plant prepared for the marine environment, including low-ground-pressure excavators, articulated dump trucks and a bulldozer.

Material conditions varied considerably across the harbour, ranging from sand and silty sand through to areas of softer silt. This required the dredging sequence and plant movements to be continually reviewed as the works progressed.

Environmental compliance was also central to the delivery strategy, with dredging and material movements undertaken in accordance with the project’s Marine Licence.

More than 55,000 m³ successfully removed

The completed works have significantly reduced harbour and navigation channel bed levels, improving navigable depths and helping to provide safer vessel access.

The project provides another strong example of Kaymac’s ability to undertake complex harbour dredging and marine civil engineering works, combining specialist marine knowledge, heavy plant operations, tidal working and environmental management.

The quality of the team’s delivery was also recognised by project consultant Adam Rood of The Bates Partnership, who praised the planning, organisation and professionalism demonstrated throughout the challenging programme.
