The project was part of a Network Rail CP5 programme of works to upgrade infrastructure along the LNW route and where possible, enhance structures to higher specifications and standards. Kaymac were contracted by Story Rail to carry out the Scour Protection works to DCL/40 Cherwell.

Following an inspection to the Afon Pandy under-bridge, it was confirmed that masonry repairs and improved scour protection were required to ensure the safety of the structure. The Afon Pandy single span masonry arch under-bridge carries the Newtown to Machynleth railway line (ELR: SBA2) over the River Cwm at 64 m 42.25 ch.

River Tonge Viaduct - Scour Protection

Kaymac Marine & Civil Engineering Ltd were commissioned by Amco Rail to install scour protection to the invert of the River Tonge running beneath the Tonge Railway Viaduct. The scour protection was in the form of a double layer of D50 type rock armour, to replace the existing mobile bed material that had evidence of severe scour. There was a large build up of material in the South Span which had resulted in a large potential for scour damage to the structure being identified.

The scour protection was in the form of a double layer of D50 type rock armour, to replace the existing gabion mattresses that were found to be inadequate to protect the structure from the scour.
